Five Training Myths That Might Be Holding You Back

Fitness advice is everywhere, and a lot of it is outdated, oversimplified, or just wrong. At Exert Fitness Centre in Abercarn, here are five myths we hear often, and what's actually true.

"Lifting weights will make me bulky"

Building significant muscle mass takes years of dedicated training and a specific approach to eating. It doesn't happen by accident. Strength training builds a leaner, stronger body far more often than a bulky one.

"You need cardio before weights to burn fat"

Fat loss comes down to overall energy balance over time, not the order of exercises in a single session. Strength training often supports fat loss better long-term because it builds muscle, which raises your resting metabolic rate.

"No pain, no gain"

Discomfort from effort is normal. Pain is not. Training through actual pain usually leads to injury and time off, not faster progress. Sustainable training beats short bursts of intensity followed by burnout.

"You have to train every day to see results"

Recovery is when your body actually adapts and gets stronger. Consistent training three to four times a week, done well, will outperform daily sessions done exhausted and under-recovered.

"Once you stop, muscle turns to fat"

Muscle and fat are different tissues; one doesn't become the other. If you stop training, muscle can reduce over time through lack of use, and fat can increase through diet, but it's not a physical conversion.

Good training is about consistency, sensible progression and looking after your body for the long run, not chasing shortcuts. If you're looking for a gym in Abercarn with coaches who'll guide you properly, ours are here to help.
