We hit £20,000!

Our community fundraising challenge - The Longest Day For Teddy has raised an incredible £20,000 for Teddy and his family.

On 29th August, six athletes took on The Longest Day – For Teddy, a gruelling 24-hour relay challenge involving continuous rowing, skiing and running.

The athletes, split into two teams, were:

Team One

  • Russell Smith

  • Nathan Williams

  • Geraint Hobbs

Team Two

  • Aaron Edwards

  • Deri Roberts

  • Aled Brown

Originally planned earlier in the year, the challenge was postponed due to injuries. Looking back, organisers feel that delay happened for a reason, allowing the event to become dedicated to Teddy and his family.

Founded 17 years ago by Rus Smith Exert Fitness Gym has built a reputation not only for fitness but for bringing people together to support worthy causes. Over the years the gym has organised numerous charitable events and annual fundraisers, including Katrina's Smile, held in memory of Russ's sister and raising money for St David's Hospice.

The Longest Day saw the wider community come together in remarkable fashion. Local businesses sponsored athletes, all 48 participation slots were filled, volunteers helped throughout the event, and supporters rallied behind fundraising activities including a raffle, BBQ and Hallie's Sweet Stall.

Rus Smith said:

"We're incredibly proud of what was achieved, not just by the athletes but by the whole community. People turned up at all hours of the day and night to support us, bring food and drinks, volunteer their time and encourage the teams.

Most importantly, this challenge was for Teddy. None of what we went through over those 24 hours compares to the challenges Teddy and his family face every day. If we've managed to make even a small difference, then every kilometre and every sleepless hour was worth it."

The event raised £14,581 through online donations, with a further £5,500 raised offline, taking the total to £20,000.

Jade Smith added:

"The amount raised is incredible, but what we'll remember most is the kindness and support shown by so many people. It was a reminder of what community is all about."

Rus and Jade have thanked everyone who sponsored, donated, volunteered, participated and supported the event, describing The Longest Day as one of the most memorable moments in Exert's history.

£20,000 raised. One incredible community. One very special little boy. 💙
